I love being outdoors be it hiking, skiing, climbing, kayaking, cycling, the list is endless. With parents that encouraged me to hike and ski since I was little, being outside and enjoying nature is in my blood. I can’t think of any place better than being in the mountains, and studying geography and environmental management at university definitely helped with this! I am based out of Canmore, Alberta, a place perfect for passionate outdoors enthusiasts.
Taking photos of my trips led to me thinking of what to do with them, and so I thought I would share some of the hikes and outdoor activities that I get up to. I use a Nikon D5100 camera or my iPhone 6 for most of my photos, though some of the older photos (pre 2012) are mostly with my old Pentax or Kodak point and shoot cameras.
Most of the hikes I’ll be describing in this blog will be about the Canadian Rocky Mountains National Parks (Banff, Kootenay, Yoho and Jasper). However I’ll also be including some of the hikes and adventures that I have been on a little further afield, such as Revelstoke and Glacier National Parks and occasionally some from the Lower Mainland.
Having always found it difficult to come to a decision on which gear is right for me, I try to make an informed choice when I eventually make a purchase. So I’ll be reviewing some of the gear that I use along the way, and I hope that this might be of some use to my readers.
I work as a hiking and tour guide in Banff National Park, as well as a wide area of Western Canada. I am accredited with the Interpretive Guides Association, with my 80 hours Advanced Adventure Medic, Avalanche Safety Training Level 1 and Canadian Ski Instructors Alliance Level 2. Contact me for more information on guiding services I am able to provide.
Aside from being outdoors, I have an interest in carpentry. I love working out how to make things, so I’ll try to include some of the projects that I’ve made too!
If you’re looking to find up to date information about trail conditions, the best place to look is the Parks Canada Trail Report Page, which is updated frequently. The hikes I’ve written about here can only show the conditions on the day I did the hike.
If you want to keep up with latest posts you can now do so by following me @RockiesOutdoors on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram. It is also possible to contact me via email using the form on the ‘Contact’ page.
Happy Trails!
Rob

Hi Rob, looks like you’ve been in the mountains a great deal. I can’t agree more with you, mountains are a real heaven, tho some more than others, they’re all so different from one another. Be your 2015 filled with exciting mountain adventures!

Your blog is a brilliant resource Rob, as well as having some great photographs. I wish I had discovered it before heading through the Canadian Rockies a few months back. Have you hike much in the Washington/Oregon mountains?

Thanks so much, I’m glad to be able to help. Unfortunately I haven’t hiked in Washington/Oregon, but some of the guide books I have for the Rockies cover some of the PNW. I just bought ‘Hiking Hot Springs in the Pacific Northwest’ by Evie Litton and Sally Jackson which seems really useful and covers Washington/Oregon/Idaho/BC – I haven’t had a chance to use it for hiking yet though.

Sounds like that might be a useful guide. I’ll check it out. Cheers Rob!

Hi! We (Ray and I) have just been advised that you are our latest Follower. That is so cool because although we are Ontario folk, our largest support group is south of the border and, while we love them all dearly, Canadian viewpoints are always welcomed. You should be aware that I do all the writing for our Blog. Ray’s feet are much to big for a keyboard and, to make matters worse, he is a bit of a klutz! His contribution, however, is to keep me going by providing seemingly endless opportunities to write about him and I. We hope you enjoy our Posts as much as we enjoy creating them. š

Being outdoors is great! Especially when you get to visit beautiful places and photograph them as lovely as you do š I would love to go to the mountains, but unfortunately for me, The Netherlands is a really flat country.
I am looking forward to future posts (and also made sure that I liked your FB-page and follow you on Twitter).
Have a great day!
Kind regards,
Tieme
